As well the Belgian Venturing Association (BVA) as the European Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (EVCA) are currently (re)designing their data collection effort, in order to produce more reliable and relevant statistics on VC/PE investments in Belgium. Reliable and timely statistics are important to: 1) communicate to the outside world what the PE/VC investment climate is; 2) assess strengths and weaknesses of the current market conditions in a timely fashion, in order to be able to take appropriate policy measures; 3) research investment practices.
The PE/VC database created within STOIO will consist of all the deals of Belgian VC/PE investors and the deals of foreign VC/PE investors in Belgian companies. Deal characteristics, investor characteristics and company characteristics will be gathered.
 

Methodology

The statistics will be gathered continually.

The primary sources of data are publicly available material:
- Publications in the Belgian Law Gazette on capital increases of Belgian companies;
- Yearly financial accounts of VC/PE investors (Belfirst/ISF)
- Shareholders information of portfolio companies (Belfirst/ISF)
- Press releases of investors and portfolio companies.

Cooperation is sought with the Belgian Venturing Association to check the database for omissions. We are currently negotiating on how to proceed together.

To collect the data we will check all publicly available information (press, Belgian Law Gazette, internet,…) on a weekly basis to spot new deals and new investors. Per deal, relevant data on investors, amount invested, sector, investment stage, … will be gathered. Moreover, the deals will be checked with the BVA on a quarterly basis in order to spot omissions. The database with active investors in Belgium will be updated on a semi-annual basis.
